Adolescent/Child Therapy and Family Services

Children and adolescents successfully meet most of the challenges posed by the various stages of their development. They also have incredible resiliency in the face of challenging environments and life issues. At the same time they are, however, very aware and sensitive to the stress in family life and their environments. When having difficulty coping, adolescent distress can manifest itself through difficulties in learning, relationships and in emotional & behavioural development. Children have less experiences, fewer coping skills and less control over their environment. They also have difficulty describing emotional problems. Distress can manifest in such ways as irritability, sleeping or eating problems, personality changes, physical complaints, disregard for personal safety, school problems, problems getting along with others, acting younger or older than their ages, and so on. Individual Counselling and Psychotherapy

Individual Counselling and/or Psychotherapy sessions are available for people who are in emotional and psychological distress, facing uncertainty or having difficulty dealing with life transitions or a range of life challenges. Distress can take many forms including depression, fear, anxiety or a loss of meaning in life. Counselling can be relatively short term and focus on current personal difficulties, or a longer process which helps people to understand the deeper roots of their present circumstances.

 

Use Counselling

Coping behaviour can initially allow people a temporary escape from their problems, and can develop from many activities; alcohol, drugs, eating, gambling, shopping, sex and use of the internet. Stigma often surrounds the labels which is fundamentally an inability to stop repetitive behaviour in spite of the harmful consequences. Millions of people experience a habitual  pattern of some sort. For many their craving or impulse offers a short-term escape from the realities of their life and is often used to deal with depression or anxiety. Counselling can be an effective way of helping the individual recognize their challenge and try to understand it. A chance to look at acknowledging their real emotional needs and examining the underlying causes can be an excellent foundation to building a new, healthier way of living. Group Counselling

Group counselling is a special form of therapy in which a small number of people meet together under the guidance of a professionally trained therapist to help themselves and one another. Members work to express their own problems, feelings, ideas and reactions as freely and honestly as possible. Such exploration gives the group the important information needed to understand and help one another. Members learn not only to understand themselves and their own issues but also become “therapeutic helpers” for other members.
