Gaining insight into the internal workings of our mind can help us to be aware of our mental processes without being swept away by them. We can get ourselves off the autopilot of ingrained habitual responses and ingrained bahaviours and move ourselves beyond the reactive emotional loops we all sometimes get trapped in. The uniquely human ability of internal insight allows us to closely examine, in depth, the processes by which we think, feel and behave. Recent finding in neuroscience, have shown that by developing the ability to focus attention on our internal states, we can reshape our neural pathways and stimulate growth in areas of the brain crucial to mental health. By using our capacity of insight and awareness we help the brain to achieve and maintain integration, a process by which separate elements are linked together into a working whole. We can alter the way our mind functions, move our lives towards well-being and away from the extremes of rigidity and chaos.
